Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Toni Kroos confirmed he will join Spanish giants Real Madrid after helping Germany win the World Cup final in Brazil.
Kroos enjoyed a fantastic tournament, scoring two goals and providing four assists as he played every minute of the World Cup for Joachim Low's eventual champions.
Speaking to Brazilian news agency UOL after the 1-0 win over Argentina in the Maracana, Kroos revealed he would be leaving German champions Bayern Munich for Los Blancos.
"We’ve finished the World Cup in the best way possible. Now I’m going to Madrid, so that’s two dreams achieved," the 24-year-old said.
The deal is expected to cost a cut-price €25m (£19.9m), because he is in the last year of his current contract. Despite negotiations last season, Kroos and Bayern were unable to reach a new deal and the midfielder was threatening to run down his contract, meaning he would leave for nothing next year.
He was paid £60,000-per-week at Bayern last season and can expect a significant increase in Madrid.
Kroos scored four goals and added eight assists in 45 matches as the club won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal Cup.
