The five top players still on the transfer market... including Angel di Maria, Daniel Agger and Marco Reus
There is still plenty of time for moving this summer
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Angel di Maria
Wanted by: Man United
Di Maria (right) feels undervalued at Real Madrid following the blockbuster summer arrival of James Rodriguez – and the club would like to be rid of the Argentine at the right price. Di Maria’s speed over the ground makes him a perfect fit for a counter-attacking side – or one in need of a hybrid winger, as Louis van Gaal’s is said to be. The price would be steep – up to £50m, – but that money will bring in a proven, world-class talent.
Daniel Agger
Wanted by: Arsenal
Arsène Wenger will have a problem at centre-back should Laurent Koscielny or Per Mertesacker pick up an injury, with either Calum Chambers or Nacho Monreal currently the next cab off the rank following the injury-prone Thomas Vermaelen’s move to Barcelona. The similarly injury-afflicted Agger wants out of Anfield, having toppled precipitously down Brendan Rodgers’ pecking order, and Arsenal could find him the perfect fit as a ball-playing defender with a tough streak. Liverpool have reported no approaches – but it is unlikely he will be at the club come August’s end.
Marco Reus
Wanted by: Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United
Reus’s reported €25m (£19.8m) release clause has got a gaggle of Premier League clubs hot under their collars. Reus dovetailing with Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool is a frightening prospect – as is the theory of Reus with Wayne Rooney or Alexis Sanchez. Any of those three clubs would benefit hugely from winning the race for a player of the Germany international’s pace and skill. Reus has rejected the offer of a new contract at Borussia Dortmund – so he will be leaving this summer, or next when his current deal expires.
Daley Blind
Wanted by: Man United
Blind admits he would not be able to resist the chance to link up again with Louis van Gaal – and Van Gaal would like a player like Blind to fit seamlessly into his 3-5-2 system. That Dutch connection could be crucial in any attempt to bring the Ajax full-back to Old Trafford, as Blind knows Van Gaal’s methods in detail from the Netherlands team.
Carlos Sanchez
Wanted by: Aston Villa
Perennial strugglers Villa need an iron fist in midfield to complement the more balletic leanings of Ashley Westwood, and they may have found an answer in the Colombian known as “The Rock”. Sanchez is in talks over a proposed £4m move to the Midlands – and were he to sign, might just be enough to make the predictions of Villa’s imminent demise into a Championship team seem premature.
