Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sunderland struggled a bit last season to keep consistently good performances going throughout the season, meaning they finished 14th, five points off the drop zone.
The upcoming season is likely to be another battle for survival for the Blackcats but if Gus Poyet can get them playing, it might not be as frustrating as last term.
COMPLETED TRANSFERS
Billy Jones - Free from West Brom
Sunderland's first summer signing was that of West Brom defender, Jones. The 27-year-old turned down a contract at the Hawthorns before joining the Blackcats. Jones has been a consistently good performer in the Premier League since 2011 but did have his season cut short last year due to injury.
Jordi Gomez - Free from Wigan
After a season of mixed emotions with Wigan last year, Gomez has returned to the top flight. He was voted Wigan's Player-of-the-Year last season but lost in both the play-off and FA Cup semi-finals. The Spaniard was part of the Latics' FA Cup winning side in 2013. The 29-year-old is a useful player able to play in several positions.
Costel Pantilimon - Free from Manchester City
Pantilimon and City parted ways earlier this summer but the Romanian was snapped up quick by Poyet. The 27-year-old, 6ft 8in goalkeeper made seven appearances for the champions last year while Joe Hart was out of form. He started in goal for City's 3-1 League Cup victory over Sunderland.
Patrick van Aanholt - Undisclosed from Chelsea
The 23-year-old had hoped for a chance at Chelsea when Ashley Cole left, but when Felipe Luis arrive, Van Aanholt knew his time was up. Spent the last two and a half seasons at Vitesse Arnhem. Signed a four-year deal.
Jack Rodwell - £10 million from Manchester City
It's hard to believe it was only three or so years ago when Rodwell was seen as the coming force amongst young English midfielders. Two seasons at Manchester City brought just 16 appearances as the former Everton man struggled desperately with injury. If he can stay clear of the treatment table, Sunderland will have made a shrewd move.
Will Buckley - £2.5m from Brighton
Gus Poyet had been pursuing the player he worked with at Brighton for much of the summer before capturing the winger in a £2.5m deal. The 24-year-old agreed a three-year deal.
Santiago Vergini - Loan from Estudiantes
Having spent the second half of last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland brought the defender back for another loan spell.
