Gary Neville has questioned the reported figures surrounding a potential swap deal involving Sergio Ramos and David De Gea.

Manchester United are reluctantly accepting of De Gea's wish to join Real Madrid but are working to bring Ramos in the opposite direction.

The true intentions of Ramos are not clear, with a source close to the top of the Spanish club indicating to The Independent that the defender could be using the interest from United in a bid to secure better terms on a new contract at the Bernabeu.

Any potential exchange of Spain internationals would likely involve Manchester United paying money in addition to letting De Gea depart, due to their weakened position due to their goalkeeper having just a year left on his contract. Ramos has two years remaining.

But the suggestion that United could pay an additional £40m has left former United defender Neville perplexed.

"These reports saying 40m plus David De Gea for Sergio Ramos?? Please no! Nothing v Ramos but it can't be right.." the England assistant manager tweeted.

It's understood that talks between the clubs continue.
