The Argentina international wants to return to his childhood club Independiente and wishes to do so whilst he can still play at a top level.
Speaking to French football magazine So Foot, Aguero said: "I have always said that I want to return to Independiente and I will do just that.
"I will return to Independiente when my contract with City expires.
"I do not want to make my comeback when I am too old. If everything goes well, I will return to the club of my heart at the age of 31."
Aguero began his career with Independiente, coming through the youth ranks at the 16-time Argentine champions. Prior to moving to Atletico Madrid in 2006, Aguero made 56 appearances and scored 23 goals.
Should he make the switch he would become the latest in a long line of South American players to impress in Europe before returning to play in their home continent, including Ronaldinho, Diego Forlan, Juan Sebastian Veron and Carlos Tevez.
