Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has teased the announcement of a “new club” in a cryptic post on social media.

The Spaniard, who signed a nine-year contract extension with Atletico in 2017, has been linked with Manchester United.

However, it’s thought to be unlikely that the announcement will revolve around him leaving the club.

Two years ago, Antoine Griezmann released a 30-minute documentary focusing on his decision whether to leave Atletico, with alternate endings recorded. He eventually decided to remain at the club before joining Barcelona a year later.

Saul’s contract includes a £130m buyout clause and, although Atletico need to offload players this transfer window, there is little desire for him to depart, with the announcement of an E-sports team mooted as one likelihood.

The 25-year-old has four goals from 37 appearances for Atletico this season and scored in the first leg of Diego Simeone’s side’s Champions League last-16 victory over Liverpool.
