Queens Park Rangers’ attempts to sell Sandro have been hit after the Brazilian midfielder failed a medical at Sporting Lisbon.

Sandro had agreed a three year deal in Lisbon, after QPR had accepted a cut-price fee of £1.5m for a permanent transfer. But a medical in Portugal last week revealed a problem with Sandro’s knee which saw the move collapse.

QPR have been trying to get Sandro, who is paid £50,000 per week, off their wage bill ever since they were relegated to the Championship one year ago. Sandro was loaned to West Bromwich Albion in January of last season but he only made five Premier League starts during his brief spell at the Hawthorns. West Brom had the option to buy him for £4m but turned it down.

Sporting Club were interested in Sandro, and offered him a three-year deal on wages far less than what QPR pay him. All three parties agreed the deal but the move collapsed last Friday.

There is one year left on the three-year deal that Sandro signed at QPR in September 2014. QPR are still trying to find another club to take him for that last year.

QPR paid Tottenham Hotspur an initial £6m for Sandro in 2014, but he could not save them from relegation in the 2014-15 season. An administrative oversight meant that Sandro was only given a 90-day visa when he joined, and when the Home Office found out in May 2015 he had to return to Brazil and apply for a new one. That wait meant that he could not find a new club last summer, despite interest from across Europe, and he started last season in the Championship before making his move to West Brom.

QPR have been trying to move on their high earners ever since relegation, with Charlie Austin joining Southampton in January and Rob Green being released this summer. But Sandro remains a QPR player for now.
