Chelsea are ready to offer Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira a pre-contract in January.

Khedira is in the last year of his contract at the Bernabeu and looks unlikely to sign an extension; he would arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer, according to the Evening Standard.

The 27-year-old has already rejected several offers from the Spanish giants, who have begun looking for his replacement, with Cruzeiro’s rising star Lucas Silva top of the list.

Khedira was the subject of interest from Arsenal during the summer but they were put off by his wage demands, which were in excess of £150,000 a week and would have made him their highest-paid player.

Chelsea have been keen on Khedira since Jose Mourinho, the manager who signed him for Real in 2010, returned to Stamford Bridge last year. The Germany international enjoyed a great relationship with Mourinho and Chelsea are believed to be in pole position to sign him.

Khedira will be able to start talking to clubs in the new year over a summer switch and that option suits Chelsea.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti wants Khedira to see out the campaign and the Spanish club would demand a transfer fee in the region of £10million.

Arsenal continue to be linked with Khedira, although it is unlikely their stance on his wages will have changed, while Manchester United may want to strengthen their midfield options.

Real's interest in Chelsea keeper Peetr Cech could help them in negotiations for Khedira although neither switch is dependent on the other.
