Manchester City’s record signing Rodri has revealed that it was the lure of playing under Pep Guardiola that enticed him to join the club .

The 23-year-old Spaniard has signed a five-year deal with the Premier League champions after City met his £62.8m release clause.

Touted as City’s successor to Fernandinho, there are lofty expectations on the 6’3” defensive midfielder who has long been compared to Sergio Busquets.

“What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad,” Rodri said after the transfer was confirmed.

“It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times.

“It’s a style that excites me, as do the Club’s ambitions.

“I can’t wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates and hopefully we can achieve great things together.”

Rodri only spent one season at Atletico, after coming through the academy at Villareal, and made 47 appearances in all competitions under Diego Simeone.

Txiki Begiristain, City’s Director of Football added: “Rodri has proven himself to be a hugely talented, young midfielder, who has all the attributes we are looking for.
