The Dutchman looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford three years after making the shock move north from Premier League rivals Arsenal, with The Guardian reporting that the Turkish side have reached an agreement for the transfer of the 31-year-old.
Reports emerged last weekend that Van Persie had negotiated a move away from the club, not long after his former team-mate and compatriot Pierre van Hooijdonk claimed United were attempting to sell him without letting the Netherlands skipper know.
Van Persie’s agent Kees Vos dismissed the claims that a move was agreed, but didn’t confirm where the player would be plying his trade this season after returning for pre-season training at the start of this week.
Vos said: “If Robin had found a new club, we would have announced it.”
But The Guardian adds that Fenerbahce’s sporting director, Giuliano Terraneo, arrived in the United Kingdom this week to finalise a move for the Netherlands international, and the Turkish club are hoping to tie up the deal by the end of this week.
It’s believed that United have reluctantly accepted the £4.7m offer that was initially made for Van Persie, despite harbouring hopes that they could make as much as £10m in selling the striker despite him entering the final year of his contract. Van Persie has been offered a three-year contract, with an additional year included as an option to the ex-Feyenoord man.
Van Persie is likely to replace his Netherlands team-mate Dirk Kuyt at Fenerbahce, and is set to link up with his former United colleague Nani after the Portuguese completed his own £4.3m move earlier this week – again after Terraneo flew to Manchester to seal the deal.
