The 35-year-old, who is part of the BBC's World Cup team, had agreed to move to Loftus Road on a salary worth less than a third of the £200,000-per-week deal he was getting at Old Trafford.
But QPR, according to the Daily Mail, are believed to have had an eleventh hour re-think over the terms offered to Ferdinand.
Harry Redknapp is still hopeful of a deal for the defender with senior officials working on a resolution.
The club are keen not to repeat the mistakes of their last spell in the top flight, where they signed a number of over the hill stars on huge contracts.
Ferdinand is believed to be keen on a return to London, where he would have been reunited with Redkanpp, the man who gave him his debut as a teenager at West Ham.
