Both clubs could seek to delay the sanction, imposed by Fifa for breaching regulations over the transfers of minors, by appealing. However, Fifa could also argue that both clubs have ample time in the current transfer window to make additional signings to cope with the ban and ensure that the suspension comes into effect at the end of the season.
The decision is a bitter pill to swallow for new Real manager Zinedine Zidane, who will see his attempts to build his own team after Rafa Benitez’s reign severely hampered by the decision, while it could also throw Diego Simeone’s future at Real into doubt with the former Argentina international linked with taking the manager role at Chelsea in the summer.
Real’s financial firepower has been evident for all to see since the era of the ‘Galacticos’, and a glimpse at the current line-up only strengthens that tag with £86m Gareth Bale, £80m Cristiano Ronaldo and £45m James Rodriguez all currently plying their trade at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But who could Real try and sign before 1 February when the current transfer window closes? Click on the gallery below to take a look at the candidates.
Real will not be allowed to register players between the end of the season and the end of the 2016/17 season, although they will be allowed to sign players to the club who will have to wait until the start of the 2017/18 season before making their debuts.
