Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Reading have made their first signing of the summer as they prepare for life in the Premier League by bringing in Nottingham Forest winger Garath McCleary on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old was Forest's player of the year this season but his contract has expired and he has signed a three-year deal at the Madejski Stadium.
Royals manager Brian McDermott told the club's website: "It's important we have brought a player of Garath's quality through the door.
"It's an early signing for us, and a great one. We are absolutely delighted to get him.
"He's young, he's got an eye for goal, he's very quick and has got a real energy about him.
"He wants to work hard and improve and, in all the players we have got here, that is a key attribute.
"And he's a nice lad, so he'll fit in well with what we're trying to do at this club."
