Manchester United have agreed a new deal with England defender Phil Jones, the club have announced.

Jones, 23, has been at Old Trafford since 2011 and has agreed to extend his stay until at least June 2019.

The centre-back, who has also played as a full-back and in midfield, has played 128 matches for the club in all competitions and played 24 games under Louis van Gaal last season.

"I am delighted to have signed a new deal," Jones said on the United website.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.

"This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support."

Red Devils' manager Louis van Gaal has been impressed with Jones' professionalism since he took the reins at the club in May last year.

"We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract," Van Gaal said. "He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.

"Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods."
