Manchester United are only interested in Sergio Ramos filling centre-back position at Old Trafford and will not turn their attention to Nicolas Otamendi if the deal for the Real Madrid player fails to materialise.

According to reports, Louis van Gaal has dismissed the idea of signing Valencia defender Otamendi.

Manchester United are understood to believe that they are being used to ramp up interest in the Argentina international, who has been expressing a desire to move on from his current club.

A bid for Ramos was rejected earlier this summer but interest in the Spain international remains. However, the latest reports suggest that the 29-year-old centre-back has patched up any differences he had with Real Madrid and is on the verge of agreeing a new contract at the Bernabeu.

Should that happen, it's claimed Van Gaal will settle with his current options. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones formed a decent partnership last term, whilst Marcos Rojo can be used at centre-back and Daley Blind has been practising in a central role during pre-season.
