Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Newcastle started last season on fire but a mixture of injuries, controversy and poor form meant they finished the year with few people singing their praises.
The Magpies, and most importantly Alan Pardew, will want to put last season's demons to bed and get back to the free-flowing football that they showed before Christmas.
COMPLETED TRANSFERS
Remy Cabella - £12m from Montpellier
His record in Ligue 1 is hugely impressive – he scored 14 goals from the wing last season. He models himself and wants to have the kind of impact that former French wingers David Ginola and Laurent Robery had on Tyneside. If he can reach those heights, the Toon will have found themselves another French bargain.
Emmanuel Riviere - £6m from Monaco
Due to the que of attacking talent at Monaco, Riviere left the French side in search of more regular first-time football. He scored 10 times last season in Ligue 1 and played regular for France's youth teams.
Siem de Jong - £6m from Ajax
The former Ajax captain can play in a variety of positions; behind the striker, on the wing or up front. His goal record is good without being outstanding, but it’s his clever link up play and team play is what will have fans excited – he’s already been named Pardew’s vice-captain.
Daryl Janmaat - £5m from Feyenoord
With Mathieu Debuchy's move to Arsenal, Janmaat will be a capable replacement for the excellent Frenchman. The Dutch right back started for the Netherlands in the first three of their World Cup games before being dropped, but showed he was a good defender and willing runner up and down the touchline.
Ayoze Perez - £1.5m from Tenerife
Certainly one for the future, the 20-year-old will probably not get too many games at St James’ Park next season.
Jack Colback - Free from Sunderland
A real coup from the club, Newcastle stole one of their biggest rivals’ best players in Colback. Industrious and talented, he will not quite fill the void left by Yohan Cabaye but will certainly add steel to a weak midfield.
Facundo Ferreyra - Loan from Shakhtar Dontesk
The Argentine's move to Tyneside was hastened by the political instability in eastern Ukraine - he and five other Shakhtar players refused to return to the club last month following a pre-season friendly in France. That could be o Newcastle's good fortune - the midfielder is highly rated in the country of his birth.
Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles - £7m from Nottingham Forest
Newcastle completed a double-swoop for the highly rated duo from Nottingham Forest before immediately loaning them back for the season. Both agreed long-term deals. 20-year-old Lascelles is a centre-back, whilst 23-year-old Darlow is a goalkeeper.
