Newcastle manager Steve McClaren could look to sign Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard on a season-long loan deal as his first signing since arriving at St James' Park.

McClaren worked with Lingard while he was manager at Derby County last season where he took the 22-year-old attacking midfielder on loan, although both would leave the club at the end of the campaign as Lingard returned to his parent club and McClaren was sacked for missing out on the Championship play-offs.

However, McClaren has been given the task to rebuild Newcastle after their scrape with Premier League relegation last season under John Carver, and the Daily Mail reports that the England Under-21 international could be on his way to the Noth-east for another spell away from Old Trafford.

Lingard has already played for Leicester, Birmingham and Brighton and Hove Albion as well as the Rams, and a fresh loan move would cast further doubt on his future as a United player despite signing a new contract in February.

It’s claimed, though, that United manager Louis van Gaal has been impressed with the way that Lingard recovered from a knee injury early last season and will be farmed out in order to gain first team football in the top flight rather than spell the end to his United career.

Newcastle have also been linked with moves for Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin and former Magpies favourite Andy Carroll, who faces an uncertain future with West Ham after a string of injuries since joining from Liverpool on a permanent deal last summer.
