Liverpool have made the first move in the battle for Nathaniel Clyne.

The Southampton right-back has enjoyed another impressive season at St Mary's and with just a year to run on his current contract, is expected to be sold this summer if he can't be convinced to sign a new deal.

Liverpool have made a £10m bid for the 24-year-old England international, only to see it rejected. They're expected to return with an improved offer, but could be outdone by their rivals.

Manchester United are also reportedly keen and Chelsea have also been mentioned as a potential bidder.

LIVERPOOL

Existing options: Emre Can, Jon Flanagan, Javier Manquillo

Glen Johnson is out of contract and will not be offered a new deal, increasing the need for a new right-back. Jon Flanagan missed the entire season through injury and there is no certainty around a return date. Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo, who is half way through a two-year loan spell at Anfield, has found it hard to break into the Reds first-team this season. Which leaves just Emre Can - a player many consider more of a midfield player than a defender.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Existing options: Rafael, Antonio Valencia

Rafael missed the majority of the season through injury, leading to Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia playing at right-back for much of the campaign. Even when Rafael does return to full fitness, doubts remain over the Brazilian's ability to hold down the right-back berth on a long-term basis.

CHELSEA

Existing options: Branislav Ivanovic, Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta could also be used at right-back but with Filipe Luis failing to make much of an impact since his arrival from Atletico Madrid last summer, Azpilicueta has been utilised on the other side of defence. That's left Branislav Ivanovic as the favoured choice under Jose Mourinho.
