Manchester United have made an opening bid of £20m for Morgan Schneiderlin according to reports as they step up their pursuit of the France international.

Southampton have rejected the offer and now United are weighing up their next move. It's understood that Saints value the 25-year-old closer to £25m.

It's claimed that United lodged the bid last week.

Manchester United could face competition from Arsenal and Tottenahm for the player who was among the stand-out performers as Ronald Koeman's side finished an unlikely seventh in the Premier League last season.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is keen to strengthen the 'spine' of his side, which includes bringing in a new central midfielder. Schneiderlin fits the bill but their is a lingering interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
