With Asamoah Gyan having left for UAE side Al-Ain and with Nicklas Bendtner’s loan period from Arsenal now over, Sunderland are in the market for a striker.
Several names have been suggested, with Wolves forward Steven Fletcher repeatedly linked to the Black Cats, as well as Junior Hoilett, Aiden McGeady and Steven Nzonzi.
When the side returned to training this week the only new face was Carlos Cuellar, but O’Neill has suggested that there will be more once the squad return from the Peace Cup in South Korea, where they head next week.
He told The Journal: "When we come back from South Korea, I would expect the situation to change.
"We are obviously in the market to try to strengthen our team, of course. I think that's pretty obvious - all football clubs will be trying to do that.
"But for us, it would be nice to add a couple of fresh faces - not just for the sake of it, but to improve the quality of the squad, which is what we are trying to do."
The side looks set to keep much of its current shape this summer as O’Neill looks to strengthen and not make great changes.
Owner and chairman Ellis Short confirmed this saying that there would not be great change, rather that the club was in the market for a few quality players to solidify a top 10 position in the Premier League.
