Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Marco Reus is at the centre of a row between Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich after his club accused Bayern of trying to unsettle the German star.
Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke released a statement on the club website that said his Bayern counterpart Karl-Heinz Rummenigge will only "damage an already tense relationship" between the two sides.
Reus was arguably Dortmund's player of the season last year, scoring 23 goals in all competitions and providing more assists than any other player in the Bundesliga.
Rummenigge last week revealed to German newspaper Bild that Reus has a €25m (£19.8m) release clause in his contract - the former West Germany star then added in an interview with ESPN that Reus is a "very interesting player" and that the clause is "dangerous".
His performances earned him a spot in Joachim Low's World Cup squad and he would have likely been a starter had he not injured his ankle in a pre-tournament warm-up.
"Borussia Dortmund has noted with some irritation that Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is currently discussing internal BVB matters in a three-day rhythm in the media,” read the statement.
"We are sure that it is quite clear to anybody interested in football what intentions lie behind such remarks. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is also fully aware that his behaviour is only going to further damage an already tense relationship between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
"Naturally as employers, we are going to continue to follow our principles in future and not discuss any details of our employees’ contracts in public."
Liverpool have been chasing a replacement for Luis Suarez since he was sold for £75m to Barcelona earlier this summer - though Reus primarily plays on the left wing, he is capable of playing through the middle.
