Ryan Giggs has revealed that Manchester United are seeking a striker, central midfielder, centre-back and a new goalkeeper should David De Gea depart.
The club's most capped player and assistant to manager Louis van Gaal says it is imperative that new recruits are brought in if the club are to improve on their fourth place finish last season.
Giggs also revealed that despite being on holiday he was in contact with Louis van Gaal and fellow assistant Albert Stuivenberg about new signings.
“If there are players available who are winners, who are proven then, yeah, let’s go and get them," he told the Sunday Times.
“On holiday I was still on the phone to Albert about players coming in and players for the new season.
“With any good team, the spine is important. Midfield, striker, centre-backs, goalkeeper. I’m sure we’ll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through."
Giggs' words correlate with the players Manchester United are known to be working on bringing in to the club.
With De Gea expected to eventually join Real Madrid, the club have been linked with Tottenham's Hugo Lloris and Ajax stopper Jasper Cillessen.
In defence, Manchester United have lodged an improved bid for Spain international Sergio Ramos and are increasingly confident of signing the Real Madrid centre-back.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin are both in the frame when it comes to central midfield.
Whilst Memphis Depay has already been signed to strengthen the Red Devils' attack, another attacker could arrive, particularly if Robin van Persie departs the club. Edinson Cavani and Harry Kane are among those thought to be in the frame.
Giggs continued: “We obviously need to strengthen because we were fourth. We weren’t first, second or third. And the teams above us will strengthen, too.
“There’s the added challenge of the Champions League, and we need players who are going to improve us.
“But we’re not too far away. We had a great record last season in the big games and the problem was the consistency.
“We dropped points we shouldn’t have and got off to a bad start.”
