Jose Mourinho has hinted that Manchester United could re-sign striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic once he has recovered from injury, despite confirming his release at the start of the transfer window.

Ibrahimovic suffered a serious knee injury at the back end of last season which caused him to miss the club’s season run-in, which included the Europa League final victory over Ajax in his home country of Sweden, which he was in attendance for.

Given the extent of his injury, the option to extend his contract for a second year was not taken up and his shirt number was given to his replacement, Romelu Lukaku.

However, Ibrahimovic has still been using United’s facilities to recover and Mourinho admitted he was not ruling out the 35-year-old playing for the club once again.

“Maybe he'll stay with us,” Mourinho said. “He's not got a contract, but he's still close to Manchester, and the fact we are involved in the Super Cup now is also his merit.”
