From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United‘s season of woe offered little comfort for supporters but it has provided plenty of fuel for the rumour mill ahead of the summer transfer window, as the club looks towards an expensive rebuild to fix their troubles.

United have been linked with as many as 60 different players already ahead of this window, as particular problem areas like their defence and centre-midfield have been targetted by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while goalkeepers and strikers are also on the watchlist given the potential departures of David de Gea and Romelu Lukaku.

From Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt to Leicester’s Youri Tielemans, via Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann and even Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, all sorts of conceivable and far less conceivable transfers have been mooted in the gossip columns.

The Independent has delved a little deeper into these stories and can exclusively reveal that most of them are nonsense, but in amongst the noise are inevitably some snippets of truth.

Here we rank each transfer rumour with an unjustifiably specific percentage-chance of happening.
