Manchester United may not be finished with their transfer business this summer just yet after further reports emerged linking the club with Southampton defender Jose Fonte, despite their manager insisting that there was no basis to the interest.

32-year-old Fonte has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and started for Saints against United on Friday as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat in their second Premier League match of the season. Southampton manager Claude Puel insisted in the build-up to the match that the reports surrounding the Portuguese Euro 2016 winner were a distraction, and insisted that the centre-back will not leave St Mary’s before the end of the transfer window next week.

Yet the Manchester Evening News reports that United are still keen on trying to sign Fonte in an effort to replace Marcus Rojo and Phil Jones, neither of which are deemed to have a future at United having been left out of Jose Mourinho’s first three competitive fixtures in charge of the club.

Rojo came off the bench in United’s Community Shield victory over Leicester City, but has not featured at all in both of the Premier League wins so far this season, while Jones has not even been included as a substitute.

The report adds that Stoke are interested in signing Jones after manager Mark Hughes refused to rule out making a late move for the England international in the transfer window.

There have already been United exits confirmed this week with both James Wilson and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson leaving the club on loan. Striker Wilson completed a move to Championship side Derby County for the rest of the 2016/17 campaign, while Wolves have announced the addition of left-back Borthwick-Jackson until the end of the season with both Luke Shaw and Rojo.
