The Frenchman has two years left on his current deal but is understood to have told his agent that he wants to experience football in another country, according to the Manchester Evening News.
It’s believed Jose Mourinho has identified the £30m-rated midfielder as an alternative to Paul Pogba should the deal for the Juventus ace fall through.
But both Chelsea and Juve are also monitoring the situation and will have been alerted to the news that PSG boss Unai Emery has permitted Matuidi to leave the French capital.
"He is a very good player,” Emery told L'Equipe.
"We have a lot of left-footed defensive midfielders. If he has the opportunity to leave and if he thinks there are too many midfielders here… But I do not want him to go."
United still lead the chase for Pogba but the transfer has grounded to a halt in recent days with reports suggesting the two clubs are in disagreement over who pays the agent fees.
Juventus are reportedly refusing to pay a penny of Mino Raiola’s fees while United were happy to half the £25m fee between the two clubs.
If the deal were eventually to fall through, Matuidi would be a viable alternative and at £30m would cost a fraction of the record-breaking £100m figure demanded for Pogba.
