Manchester United are hopeful that Luke Shaw will agree an improved new deal, capping a creditable turnaround at the club for the England defender.

The 24-year-old’s current contract runs out at the end of the season, and the expectation up until recently was that the left-back would leave on a free transfer to one of United’s Premier League rivals, having struggled to start in Jose Mourinho’s two years at the club.

That has changed this season though, with Shaw proving himself one of United’s best performers in a tough campaign. The feeling is he has earned a pay-rise but United are also conscious of the number of their players out of contract in the summer.

Club captain Antonio Valencia is one of those whose current deals expires at the end of the season, along with big-money signing Anthony Martial.

Goalkeeper David De Gea is another player only contracted until next summer, although along with Martial the club hold an extension clause in his contract that would automatically extend his stay until 2020.

Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling also face uncertain futures at Old Trafford, while Andreas Pereira and Matteo Darmian are also out of contract next year.
