The 30-year-old is refusing to commit to signing a new deal with the German champions, leaving Louis van Gaal hopeful that he can resume a fruitful relationship with the World Cup-winner after they worked together during Bayern's 2009/10 Bundesliga win.
Both the Mail and the Telegraph reveal that preliminary talks have already taken place with the player in advance of Schweinsteiger joining the Red Devils for next season.
The midfielder, who has made 500 appearances for Bayern and won eight league titles, is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.
Injuries have limited Schweinsteiger to 19 league appearances this season, but if he regains fitness he could provide a medium-term solution to Manchester United's search for depth in midfield, with Michael Carrick turning 34 in July.
The Reds remain linked with moves for Gareth Bale, Nicolas Otamendi and Schweinsteiger's Bayern teammate Thomas Muller in the summer window, while Louis van Gaal reportedly had an early move for Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling rebuffed by their rivals.
