No less than 12 players have left United since Van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford midway through July, while Rio Ferdinand was deemed to be surplus to requirements before the Dutchman’s arrival. United did have a rather large squad to cope with, although Van Gaal has both world class quality and up and coming talent to work with following their dramatic end to the transfer window.
Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera were signed early in the window, before deals for Marcus Rojo and a British record transfer for Angel Di Maria were completed last month. Not content with his business so far, Van Gaal added Netherlands defender Daley Blind on transfer deadline day, before finally completing the shock move for Radamel Falcao at 1.30am this morning.
While a number of players had already been given the green light to move on, United were still quick to rid themselves of some of the fringe players that were facing a season of frustration following the last-minute deals.
