The Dutchman reportedly held one-to-one talks with six players at the club's Carrington training ground over the weekend, according to the Daily Mail.
Marouane Fellani, Wilfried Zaha, Shinji Kagawa, Will Keane, Nani and, surprisingly, right-back Rafael were the players to have words with the 63-year-old.
Midfield flops Fellaini and Zaha, Portugese winger Nani and youngster Keane were told by Van Gaal that the club would listen to any offers that came in.
Japanese playmaker Kagawa was told he would have a role in the squad, but would be behind Juan Mata and Ander Herrera in the pecking order, but Rafael could find himself departing the club if Van Gaal can bring in another right-back. Mexican striker Javier Hernandez and Brazilian midfielder Anderson already know they are on the transfer list.
United have been linked with Juan Cuadrado, Arturo Vidal, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria in recent days, while Van Gaal is also known to be chasing at least two centre-backs.
Thomas Vermaelen was signed by Barcelona over the weekend while Mats Hummels has just been named Borussia Dortmund captain. Raphael Varane, Jan Vertonghen and Mehdi Benatia are possible alternatives at centre-back.
