The 28-year-old struggled to replicate his best form under former United manager Loius van Gaal, often stifled by strait-jacket defensive tactics, but has seen his stock tumble even lower following Mourinho’s appointment.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Everton have offered in the region of £20m to save him from another year on the side-lines but face competition from a host of clubs across the continent.
Ronald Koeman, the Everton manager, is expected to flex the financial muscle afforded to him by new owner Farhad Moshiri at Goodison Park ahead of the new Premier League season but it appears unclear if he will succeed with enticing Mata to Merseyside.
Mourinho has already completed the signings of defender Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer as he continues his redesign of the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal.
Ibrahimovic signed a one-year contract, with the option for a second season, on Friday after leaving French champions Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer while Bailly was ensnared from Villarreal in a deal which could cost up to £30m.
