The Mexico international has failed to improve on the promise shown in his debut season at Old Trafford when he scored 20 goals in all competitions.
The arrival of Louis van Gaal presented a fresh chance for the 26-year-old but Hernandez does not seem to fit into the Dutchman's culture in which players need to be multi-functional.
If his future seemed uncertain before Manchester United's victory over Inter Milan on penalties in the early hours of this morning, it was positively precarious after. The 2010 signing was given just 12 minutes of game time and when asked after the match to assess the Mexican and whether he would be sold, Van Gaal replied flatly: "I can't answer as he is a United player at the moment."
Despite scoring just four league goals last term, there will not be a shortage of suitors for Hernandez.
Tottenham have been long-term admirers and are expected to be involved in any move for him, whilst La Liga winners Atletico Madrid have also admitted an interest. Their manager, Diego Simeone, was quoted as saying when asked about Hernandez: "The technical department are handling it. Like any other player who we are interested in, Hernandez has a chance of arriving before the transfer window closes."
