Manchester United’s long pursuit of Bruno Fernandes may be about to head towards a formal bid being made.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified the Sporting midfielder as a player he wants to bolster his midfielder and United are now said to have made a £50m offer for the 24-year-old.

The Mirror adds that United are willing to pay him £5.5m each year, which works out at around £100,000-a-week.

It is thought that Sporting are likely to hold out for closer to £70m, irrespective of Paul Pogba’s future.

Meanwhile, The Independent recently revealed that United are still short of Leicester City's valuation for Harry Maguire, but the aim is for a deal to be done this week.

The 2016 Premier League champions value the player at £80m but are willing to do a deal at £70m plus add-ons, but it is understood that United are still around £10m short of that.

More negotiations will take place this week and the feeling is that a deal will be done, given Manchester City - who also like the England centre-half - are currently reluctant to properly enter the race.

Maguire has informed Leicester of his desire to go to United, and the club will respect his wishes so long as their valuation is met.

Brendan Rodgers told talkSPORT that the Foxes have already rejected two offers for the England international. “It’s pretty simple really and we are quite relaxed about it,” Rodgers said of the situation surrounding Maguire.

“Harry is a top class player and of course this has attracted interest, with two bids coming in.

“But they are nowhere near to meeting the valuation of the club. Harry is relaxed about it, we are, he’s been absolutely brilliant.”

Romelu Lukaku was not part of Manchester United’s matchday squad during their 4-0 win against Leeds.

The wantaway Belgian forward is an Inter Milan transfer target and was due to play. He took part in an open training session, but picked up an injury after the media left.

David De Gea was another injury absence, despite Solskjaer suggesting he would play. The goalkeeper was said to fall ill ahead of the match.

De Gea is on the verge of signing a new contract at the club, despite Ed Woodward refusing to give the goalkeeper the same ludicrous wages as Alexis Sanchez
