Louis van Gaal is expected to conduct an overhaul of the squad when he parachutes in after the World Cup and is believed to have a transfer kitty in the region of £200m if the right targets can be found.
De Gea appears to be aiming high with those he hopes to see playing in front of him next season, having now linked two of his Spain team-mates with a move to Old Trafford.
Having revealed that he has been attempting to persuade Barcelona midfielder Fabregas to join him, he also wants to see another Barcelona player make the switch.
"I would bring Andres to Manchester United as, for me, he is one of the best players in the world - if not the best," the goalkeeper is quoted as saying by The Sun.
How the 30-year-old who has spent his entire senior career at the Nou Camp would slot into Van Gaal's midfield isn't clear, but De Gea doesn't believe extra room would need to be made.
"I wouldn't sell Juan Mata to make way for him. Juan is a great player."
De Gea was today included in Spain's final 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil, along with Iniesta and Fabregas.
