Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Manchester United were always going to find their first season without Sir Alex Ferguson tough but last season was worse than many believed it could be.
United, under David Moyes for the most part, finished seventh in the league, a massive 22 points of the top. This term, with Louis van Gaal in charge, United must do better and start to regain some of their former glory.
COMPLETED TRANSFERS
Luke Shaw - £27m from Southampton
The young England international arrives with a reputation as one of the best up-and-coming left-backs in the world. His performances for Southampton last season caught the eye leading to his big money transfer to Old Trafford. Apparently returned to training a week early to get a head start for his new club.
Ander Herrera - £29m from Athletic Bilbao
Having failed to sign the creative midfielder last summer, United didn't mess around this time and secured the Spaniard early.
Vanja Milinkovic - Undisclosed from FK Vojvodina
The 17-year-old goalkeeper is one for the future.
Marcos Rojo - £16m from Sporting Lisbon
The Argentina international is yet to play a game for Louis van Gaal because of a work permit issue. Rojo is known for his fiery temper and strength, as well as his versatility. He will likely play on the left of Van Gaal's back three but can also fill in at left-back.
Angel Di Maria - £59.7m from Real Madrid
Manchester United broke the British transfer record to bring Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford and his quality was on show in his debut against Burnley, even if he failed to spark the club to its first win of the season.
Daley Blind - £14m from Ajaz
A Van Gaal favourite, Blind is a highly useful utility man who is excellent on the ball, quick and clever. He will probably start in the centre of midfield but could play wing back, like he did for the Netherlands during the World Cup.
Radamel Falcao - Loan from Monaco
The arrival of Falcao will end up cost United £19m for just a year of guaranteed football at Old Trafford - they do have first option to buy. Falcao will score goals but Louis van Gaal may have trouble finding a place for him into a team.
