As the window moves further along, as does the outlandish nature of the latest transfer rumours to hit Old Trafford.
The Daily Express has this morning reported that United have launched an opening bid for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels. Referencing 'reports in Italy', the paper states that United have made a move for the German star, though they do not say how much - he is valued at somewhere around £30million.
The same paper also states that Gareth Bale 'WILL' be sold to Old Trafford to make way for Hummels' team-mate Marco Reus, who is expected to join Los Blancos in the summer. Manchester United will need to pay around £120m for the Welshman's services.
United will also test Aston Villa's resolve with an initial £1.5m bid for centre-back Ron Vlaar, according to the Daily Star, who is available on a free in the summer. The 29-year-old is a favourite of Louis van Gaal's and would offer a short-term solution to United's defensive woes.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim United have offered a contract to former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. The Spaniard has been out of contract since July but had been training at Carrington to keep fit.
Raphael Varane continues to be linked with both United and Chelsea.

Martin Odegaard looks likely to join Real Madrid after flying to Spain. The highly-rated teenager, 16, visited Manchester United before Christmas but the Manchester Evening News reports the Dane's representatives have not been in contact since.
Yohan Cabaye will disappoint a United, Liverpool and Arsenal by staying in France to fight for his wants to stay at PSG and fight for place, according to the French ,media.
Palermo youngster Paul Dybala would prefer to stay in Italy rather than join Louis van Gaal, report the Express, while Leeds have offered young prodigy Lewis Cook a new deal to fend off interest.
