Manchester United are confident that they have made a breakthrough in negotiations to bring Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford.

As The Independent exclusively reported on Sunday night, Sanchez is now leaning towards joining forces with Jose Mourinho as Manchester City refuse to meet Arsenal’s £35m asking price.

The 29-year-old forward would also demand wages of approximately £400,000-a-week, out of step with City’s present wage structure.

United, however, are more than willing to pay both the fee and the salary, making them clear favourites to secure Sanchez’s signature over the next 48 hours.

Elsewhere, Lucas Moura has openly admitted that his time at Paris Saint-Germain is coming to an end amid reports of interest from United.

The winger, who was courted by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2012, has also decided that the Premier League is his preferred destination.

“With what the coach has said, it looks like this is the end of my Paris story,” he said after PSG’s win over Nantes on Sunday. “I have offers but I cannot talk about them.

“I like English football very much, it is truly one of the best leagues in the world. I have always said that I want to stay in Europe - I still have things to achieve here.”

Meanwhile, according to AS, Cristiano Ronaldo is talking up a return to Manchester United again.

The Ballon d’Or winner is reportedly unhappy with Real Madrid’s unfulfilled promises over a new contract and pining for a second coming at Old Trafford.
