The January transfer window should give us a clue. Should they look like spending some of the £80m received from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo, then the murmurings would subside. If they buy cheap or not at all, then the fears of the United fans will escalate.
The manager Alex Ferguson claims in each transfer window that he doesn't intend to buy any players, but he usually does. Some of these may well be on his list.
