Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Reports have emerged from Spain this morning claiming that Manchester United have had a sensational £110m double bid for Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Raphael Varane rejected.
Bale has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford, after a frustrating season in Spain, where he was targeted by Real fans as they recorded a trophyless campaign.
Bale, who joined Real for a world-record £85m in September 2013, scored 17 goals in all competitions for the club last term but, like Real, endured a disappointing season over all.
Last month, the Wales forward's agent, Jonathan Barnett, said that his client's career at Real is suffering because his team-mates are not passing to him.
"Real have to work with Gareth and pass the ball to him more," Barnett had said. "Give him more of the ball and let him show everybody what he's good at. He's going to be the best player at Real Madrid when his team-mates work with him and help him. Hopefully Real will come to terms with this."
The high-rated France defender Varane, 22, has also been linked with a move to Chelsea.
