Manchester United and Arsenal are set to miss out on Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal, who is close to completing a move to Bayern Munich.

The Italian champions have received an offer of €40million (£28m) for the 28-year-old, whose agent, Fernando Felicevich, is in Munich to finalise a deal with the German champions, according to the Guardian.

Juventus were initially asking for €45m but when Bayern countered with a €30m move, the two clubs settled on a €40m deal that will see €37m paid up front and €3m in add-ons.

Vidal, who is currently on holiday after helping Chile win the Copa America, was a key player as Max Allegri's squad came close to winning the treble last season, before defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final.

He has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal this summer, although both clubs moved on from him as a serious target a few weeks ago, with his drink-driving crash cited as a possible reason.

Arsene Wenger is still linked with signing a midfielder but it is unlikely Louis van Gaal will bring in a player in that position, having completed deals for Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger earlier this week.

Vidal joined Juventus from Bayer Leverkusen in 2011 and has won Serie A in all four of his seasons there, as well as one Coppa Italia.

Juventus are now light a midfielder and are being linked with Julian Draxler of Schalke, Chelsea's Juan Cuadrado and Porto's Alex Sandro.
