Manchester City 'out of the race' for Kylian Mbappe, admits director of football Txiki Begiristain
The former Barcelona chief also gives an update on City's pursuit of Lionel Messi

Your support makes all the difference.Manchester City are “out of the race” to sign Monaco’s young superstar Kylian Mbappe, the club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain has admitted.
The Premier League side were one of a number across Europe – including PSG and Real Madrid – said to be interested in the 18-year-old’s signature but Begiristain says a deal is now “impossible”.
“We are out of the race," Begiristain told reporters at the Champions League draw in Monaco.
"It is impossible to do it with the timing remaining."
Mbappe’s future at Monaco looks ever more uncertain, with club supporters groups condemning the youngster for his conduct having missed the club’s last two games as rumours of a move to Ligue 1 rivals PSG gathered speed.
If Mbappe is to force a move away from the principality then he may well have to settle it this weekend.
France coach Didier Deschamps has warned his players that he will not allow them to leave to on transfer business once they join the international squad’s training camp on Monday.
Begiristain, meanwhile, has also ruled out any possible move for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. The Argentine’s future has also been in doubt but, while he is yet to sign a contract extension, Beigiristain is convinced he will remain at Camp Nou for the long-term.
“Messi is staying at Barcelona for sure,” the former Barca director of football added.
Nevertheless, Begiristain is confident of City’s chances in the Champions League this season.
“Why not play in a final? This is our target,” he said. “We are building the team and I think we are better than last season. Our target as a football club is to be consistent in our performances in Europe.”
