Ragnar Klavan will leave Liverpool and sign for Cagliari in a deal worth around £2m.

The Estonian defender, who was bought from Augsburg as a versatile back-up option by Jurgen Klopp two years ago, has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Reds with Joe Gomez's return to fitness.

It is understood that Klavan was given the option to remain at Anfield as a fringe contributor or to find regular first-team football and after a smattering of clubs demonstrated interest in the left-sided central defender he opted for a move to Sardinia

Cagliari finished 16th in Serie A last season, with a win in week 36 lifting them out of the relegation zone and to safety when they had appeared doomed.

The Rossoblu have been in the market for veterans all summer, signing former Shakhtar Donetsk and Croatia favourite Darijo Srna on a Bosman.

Klavan, 32, started 16 Premier League games last season for Liverpool and featured seven times in the club's run to the Champions League final. He became the first Estonian to score a Premier League goal on January 1, 2018, but is the second man from his homeland to play in the English top flight after former Derby County and Sunderland goalkeeper Mart Poom.
