Liverpool are on the verge of making Ragnar Klavan, the Augsburg defender, their fifth signing of the summer.

The 30-year-old Estonia international will join in a deal worth £4.2m, according to BBC Sport, and provide cover in the centre of defence.

Jurgen Klopp is currently short of options at the back. Both Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez suffered Achilles tendon injuries last week, while Martin Skrtel left the club for Fenerbahce.

Georginio Wijnaldum, the Newcastle United midfielder, could also be making his way to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool have emerged as favourites to sign the Netherlands international, according to the Daily Telegraph, and are confident that they can persuade the north-east club to sell for just £20m..

Wijnaldum would find himself competing with several other high-profile attacking midfielders if he were to move to Merseyside.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Liverpool’s most expensive summer signing so far, could all operate behind the striker for Klopp’s side next season.

Piotr Zielinski would be a better fit but the impasse over his long-awaited move from Udinese appears no closer to a positive resolution.

Bartolomej Bolek, Zieinski’s agent, has told Gazetta dello Sport that a decision has been made, but he would not reveal whether his client was Milan or Merseyside-bound.

"We have already made our choice, but for the moment it's a secret,” he said.

Zielinski is thought to prefer a move to Liverpool, but Udinese are reluctant to sell to the Premier League club.
