Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will hold talks with Schalke amid reported interest from Liverpool, according to reports in Holland.

The 30-year-old is currently at the World Cup with the Netherlands, and despite featuring intermittently as a substitute, he scored an injury-time winner in the 2-1 win over Mexico.

Huntelaar, who had spells with AC Milan, Real Madrid and Ajax before joining the German club in 2010, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Tottenham and Manchester United showing interest in the past, and only has a year left to run on his contract.

The prolific striker admits he is aware of the speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool but refused to discuss any possibility of a transfer before speaking to his employers.

"Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I've talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.

“With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament.”

The Netherlands take on Costa Rica on Saturday for a place in the World Cup semi-finals, with Huntelaar likely to be on the bench.
