Spanish defender Javier Manquillo has decided to join Liverpool over Arsenal and is expected to complete a medical soon.

Spanish newspaper AS say the Atletico Madrid man, 20, is flying to Merseyside to put pen to paper on a two-year loan deal.

The right back is a graduate of Atletico's academy, but played just five matches in La Liga last season, and 10 in total, as Diego Simeone's team lifted the Spanish title for the first time in 18 years.

Manquillo is best known for his performance in the Copa del Rey semi-final, where he first conceded a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo that led to a penalty, before sustaining a nasty neck injury after a collision with the Real Madrid star.

The injury kept him out of the squad for a month but Manquillo was never first choice, with Juanfran playing the majority of the matches and Belgian Toby Alderweireld also featuring when needed.

Manquillo is believed to have picked Liverpool over Arsenal after the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy, who will undoubtedly be first choice at the Emirates next season, and Calum Chambers who can play in a number of positions.

The defender also had offers in La Liga and France, but has been attracted by the lure of Champions League football.

He has a contract with Atletico until 2018 and the 5ft 9in defender has been capped at every level from Under-16 to Under-20 for Spain.
