It’s the question on every Liverpool supporter’s lips; what’s the latest on Georginio Wijnadum?

As you probably know by now, a fee in the region of £23m, which could rise to £25m, has been accepted by Newcastle United.

Wijnaldum himself underwent the first part of his medical at Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground, on Thursday and will return to complete the examination on Friday.

Following that, he will fly to the United States to join up with Jürgen Klopp’s squad on their pre-season tour.

Meanwhile, the summer’s most bizarre deal so far is done, with Alex Manninger signing a short-term contract to be third-choice goalkeeper at Anfield.

The former Austria international has been training with Liverpool since his release from Augsburg and will provide back-up to Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.

Max Meyer, the Schalke 04 youngster, is reportedly attracting interest from the Merseyside club.

The Germany Under-21 international was on Klopp’s radar during his time at Dortmund, according to Bild, and that interest has apparently been renewed.

Meyer would have to compete with Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and possibly Wijnaldum for a place in attacking midfield, his favoured position.

When you put it like that, a move seems unlikely.

A move for Jordan Amavi would be more practical, given Liverpool’s ongoing issues at left-back.

It is not clear yet whether Alberto Moreno will retain his place after his horrorshow in May’s Europa League final, while talk of signing Leicester City’s highly-rated Ben Chilwell has fallen quiet.

Amavi, one of the few Aston Villa players not to disgrace himself last season, has been on Klopp’s shortlist for a while, say Le Parisien.

Liverpool will apparently decide within the next 10 days whether they wish to make a formal bid.
