Liverpool have confirmed the loan signing of 20-year-old right back Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.

The right back is a graduate of Atletico's academy, but played just five matches in La Liga last season, and 10 in total, as Diego Simeone's team lifted the Spanish title for the first time in 18 years.

"I'm very happy to have signed for a club like Liverpool. I think it's one of the biggest in Europe. Any footballer would want to come and play here," Manquillo told liverpoolfc.com

"When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you don't think of anything else than going straight there.

"It's a team that nowadays, as I said before, any player would want to be a part of."

Manquillo is best known for his performance in the Copa del Rey semi-final, where he first conceded a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo that led to a penalty, before sustaining a nasty neck injury after a collision with the Real Madrid star.

He is believed to have joined on a two-year deal with the possibility of the move becoming permanent.

Manquillo added: "I've come here to try and secure a place for myself in the side and if possible stay here for many more years in the future."

The defender also had offers in La Liga and France, but has been attracted by the lure of Champions League football. He has been reported to have picked Liverpool over Premier League rivals Arsenal.

He has a contract with Atletico until 2018 and the 5ft 9in defender has been capped at every level from Under-16 to Under-20 for Spain.

Manquillo is Brendan Rodgers' seventh new signing of the summer, joining following Southampton trio Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana and Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, and Divock Origi.
