Louis van Gaal is faced with the issue of replacing Manchester United's long-time central midfielder, who will turn 34-years-old this summer. There was enough belief in the England international to carry on beyond this season that the club offered him a new deal, however they were only willing to offer the former Tottenham player a one-year deal - which he signed in March.
Van Gaal said at the time that Carrick "is a great reader of the game and his exceptional versatility has enabled me to play him in different positions on the pitch."
Now the Manchester United manager is seeking a new player who can fulfil those duties and according to the Daily Mail, Gundogan has been identified as a suitable candidate. Manchester United have apparently watched the 24-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder extensively.
With the Germany international's contract due to expire at the end of next season and with manager Jurgen Klopp leaving this summer, there is a sense they could have success with a bid this summer.
