Gundogan had been a target for Liverpool while he was linked last summer with a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal, but strong reservations emerged about the player’s injury history given his lack of football in the past two seasons.
United manager Louis van Gaal though made 24-year-old Gundogan one of his key transfer targets this summer as he continues to rebuild his squad at Old Trafford.
The Germany international, who missed out on last summer's World Cup success in Brazil, was expected to fly-in to Manchester airport on Saturday for contract talks.
The former Nurnberg midfielder is out of contract at the end of next season, and has made it clear he has no intentions of signing a new deal.
A number of Dortmund players face an uncertain future after head coach Jürgen Klopp handed in his resignation. Mats Hummels looks set to leave the Bundesliga side this summer with United leading the race to sign the defender, while Marco Reus has constantly been linked with an exit with the Gunners and Real Madrid in the hunt despite signing a new contract extension in February this year.
