The 26-year-old full-back is well-known to Town boss David Wagner from his time with the Bundesliga giants but has struggled for first-team football and will be allowed to move on this summer.
Durm is seen as surplus to requirements by new Dortmund boss Lucien Favre but will add versatility and experience to a Huddersfield squad that performed miracles to stay in the Premier League last year.
Capable of playing at left-back or right-back, as a wing-back or even in a wide midfield role, Durm will supply depth at a number of positions. He was part of Joachim Low’s Germany squad for the successful 2014 World Cup in Brazil, though he has not appeared for the national team since the Euro 2016 qualifiers more than two years ago.
He is expected in Yorkshire for a medical this week.
